Always
Damned,
Always
Guilty
Women always seem to be taking the blame. As my sociology professor
pointed out, many women apologize for a variety of things that aren't
their fault. For example, a woman neglects to hold the doorfor
someone carrying luggage. She apologizes, yet she was under no real
obligation to holdthe door.
This often carries over to relationships. I've seen myself taking undue
blame a dozen times - and that's in a healthy relationship.
So why do women feel so guilty about these seemingly commonplace
things?
I believe it is social. Eve was the first one who knowingly sinned,
according to the Bible. And men, nevertheless, are jealous of her
childbearing abilities. (The Easter Bunny is male, yet leaves eggs; Eve
was
created from Adam, not vice versa).
To make matters even worse, the media puts women in a difficult
situation. We are told that slutty is sexy. Thin is sexy. These are the
images men are distracted by. The moment we become this, though, we
apparently become the evil of society. However, is this not what society
wants, for isn't the media merely a reflection of society?
Women always appear to be the bearer of some sort of sin.
These are just my observations and experiences. Have you ever
considered how difficult it is to go shopping, given all of these media
influences? I'm of average weight, and I wear a size 9. However, at some
stores, I am told that I am 'too large' for the clothing, and that perhaps
I
should try a plus size store. The stores downsize in a literal sense; what
used to be a size 5 in Wet Seal is labeled as a size 9.
Do we wither until nothing is left, confront the sin, or make a change?
Are
we playing into victim status, or is this a real threat to the health of
women?
There are so many mixed messages in the media. Drew Barrymore is
supposedly 'round,' but she can't be as big as I am, and I'm average.
Society needs some kind of reality check.
Or perhaps it just needs a revamped Garden of Eden, for that which we
now live in festers with media, capitalizing on each weakness.
