Don't
Get Nabbed:
How
To Avoid
Speeding
Tickets
Here are some helpful hints on where cops hide out, and how to avoid
being nabbed by one.
1) 25-35 m.p.h. zones: Cops love nabbing speeders in these areas, and
parents love complaining about how people race through their
child-infested neighborhoods (don't get me wrong, I love kids, but they
do
complain to law enforcement, and the cops keep look outs)
Just take care to drive slowly here. Take note of childful areas, parks,
hospitals, police stations, and other municipal buildings.
2)Speedtraps: Cops often hide under the overpasses on highways, and
usually on bigger roads. I usually check SPEEDTRAP.COM before I leave.
Another way to uncover speedtraps is to simply drive carefully on your
route at first, taking note of the cop cars perched at angles to get ya.
3) Highways: If there are 3 lanes, stick to the middle one. Try to avoid
passing on the right. Moderate traffic is good, because you can always
speed, but don't speed as fast as the fastest person in front of you. The
cop would most likely rather nab someone going 10 m.p.h. faster than
you.
4) Common Sense: Don't provoke a cop. Don't act suspicious, don't drink
and drive. This is the easiest way to save you from a hassle. At night,
cops shine flashlights into cars to make sure the passengers are wearing
safety belts (which they should be doing anyway!) This is a perfect
excuse for a cop to pull you over if he or she suspects you of something
else!
5) Citations beat points: At all costs, keep your driving record CLEAN!
I
have a clean record, and both times I was pulled over, the cop saw this
and gave me a citation instead of a ticket. It was a $94.00 fine each
time, but my insurance rates did not increase. Also, if you're not in your
home state (where your plates/license are from), a cop can only give you
a speeding citation, unless you're driving wrecklessly.
6) If stopped: be polite, be sweet, be cute, and if necessary, cry. Always
have and provide the proper documentation. Never try to bribe a cop;
they can fine you more for that.
7) Resources: The ACLU (www.aclu.org) has a great little pdf file that
you
can print out. It tells you what to do if you're stopped by a cop. This
is
good if you're scared of being pulled over, because it will help you go
along with procedures.
8) Be safe: If it's late at night or you just get a creepy feeling, put
on
your blinkers, drive slowly, and have the cop follow you to a public
location, such as a populated gas station. I'd really advise doing this
if
you get nabbed by an unmarked car. Don't drink and drive, wear your
belts, don't take alcohol over state lines, don't leave drugs in your car
(they can take your whole car away if anyone in the car has possession),
and just be smart!
